“Illustrated Jade Tube Illumination Bureau “The Classics of Physiognomy for the Ancients Who Knew Their Faces and Hearts” was written by (Southern Tang) Song Qiqiu (887-959). Song Qiqiu, styled Chaohui, later changed to Zisong, was born in Luling (now Ji’an City, Jiangxi Province). He once served as a judge of the Dianzhi Army, a member of the right division Wailang, and Tongping Zhangshi, etc., and was named Duke of Chu by Li Zhen. After being convicted and abolished, he committed suicide and died. The whole book “Yuguan Zhaoshenju” is dedicated to physiognomy, which is quite systematic. The physiognomy has both form and spirit. It not only looks at five sense organs, but also looks at body shape, not only discusses complexion, but also distinguishes four seasons. The book also details palm techniques, recording 72 pictures of various palm prints. Because this book is an earlier one among the works on physiognomy, it has been widely circulated and has been taken by physiognomists of all ages. The book preserves a wealth of physiognomy information, which can provide a reference for studying the development of physiognomy in our country.
