The Heavenly Stems and Five Elements are single, while the Earthly Branches contain many and mixed qis of the five elements, such as: original qi, middle qi, and residual qi. However, some people put forward the theory that the heavenly stems and earthly branches mutually restrain each other. On the surface, it seems that the Five Elements of Heavenly Stems and the Five Elements of Earthly Branches should be discussed in the same way, but they both ignore their essence. At the very least, I don’t have a deep understanding of the meaning of the restraint of the five elements, and I don’t have a clear understanding. We have clearly pointed out in the introduction to the basic theory of four-pillar prediction: “The essential meaning of restraint of the five elements is the transformation of the five elements into each other to achieve the whole process of qualitative and quantitative changes.” The substantive meaning of restraint already includes the birth and restraint of the Earthly Branches and Five Elements. Therefore, ancient books say: “The heavenly stems and the earthly branches are one with each other. ” When the root is prosperous, the stem is also prosperous, and when the root is weak, the stem is also declining.
